Two weeks ago I was reminded why I started on this path of raising awareness around health insurance in our community. During my weekly volunteering I was attacked by a dog who ripped the top half of my lip clean off of my face. It sounds so morbid to people who aren’t living in or from the states, but as I drove to the ER all I could think about was how happy I am that I have great health insurance. You would think in a traumatic moment anything else would come to mind. But every American right now knows exactly what I am saying.. because they know what it means to NOT have any.
One of the scariest things to receive as an adult is your accruing medical bills. Even scarier when you are the one footing the entire thing instead of being able to work with your coverage. With just my first initial visit to the ER I am looking at around $10,000 and counting still. Anesthesia for an hour totaled $2,155.00 while the skin graph and lip repair came to $7,702.60. Remember this is just 2 procedures alone and not counting for anything else they did or gave me that day nor the room. All these charges add up, and they add up quickly. My estimate after this is all said and done is $50-70k total, which would be my responsibility entirely if not for my insurance.
Without health insurance I’m sure you can already see how stressful this would be. Please, let this be a reminder to you that insurance is not a luxury expense it is a necessity! Accidents happen and not ever when you are prepared or plan on them.
